FreeAgent is brilliant at company-level books - but its project tools stop at account totals. Project Plus adds the project-level layer it's missing: monthly project P&L, journal-aware analysis, transaction fixes, period spreading, locked-year reallocations - plus your own projects, project groups and custom P&L layouts - all reconciled to the penny.

Real posts from FreeAgent's own developer forum, independent reviews and accountants' blogs - every one of them a gap Project Plus closes.
It has taken around 2 hours for me to process all of the associated transactions, by manually opening every transaction's 'more options' page.
Why can't I setup a project and then mark certain invoices/expenses as being part of that project?
I have multiple projects in the business and need to be able to track their profitability and each project stream has multiple clients.
Do I REALLY need to loop through ALL bank tx explanations to find the ones relating to a project?
The reporting tools were lacking compared to competitors, with no custom reports or custom templates available across the platform.
There is currently no ability to pull through Project P&L as available in the UI?
Quotes are from public forum posts and are used here as illustrations of common pain points. Project Plus is an independent add-on, not affiliated with FreeAgent.
Each feature closes a specific gap in FreeAgent, without ever breaking your reconciliation.
FreeAgent's project report shows a single lifetime total per category. Project Plus gives you a true profit & loss for every project, month by month - turnover, cost of sales, admin, gross and operating profit - exactly like the company P&L you already trust.
One figure per category for the project's whole life. No monthly view, no comparatives.
Full monthly matrix per project, with subtotals and period comparison.
In FreeAgent a journal entry has no project field - so anything posted by journal is invisible to project reporting. Project Plus lets you allocate journal lines to a project inside the app, pulling that value into the right project without ever editing the journal in FreeAgent.
Journals can't carry a project. Capitalised costs, accruals and corrections vanish from project views.
Allocate each journal line to a project. Category totals stay identical - so it still reconciles.
Project Plus scans your whole P&L and surfaces every line that's missing a project code - invoices, bills, expenses and bank explanations. Assign them to a project in one click, entirely inside the app. No two-hour slog through the bank feed; no jumping back and forth in FreeAgent.
No "show me what's untagged" view. Bulk assignment isn't possible - it's one transaction at a time.
A single worklist of everything unassigned, with one-click and bulk assignment.
From any unassigned line you can jump straight back into FreeAgent to set the project at source - quick for a bill, even one that's already been paid. Invoices are the catch: once an invoice is paid, re-projecting it in FreeAgent means the full loop - unallocate the payment, take the invoice back to draft, change the project, mark it as sent, then re-allocate the payment. In Project Plus you skip every one of those steps and just set the project in a single click. Locked periods - which FreeAgent won't let you edit at all - are the same story: effortless here, no unlocking.
A paid invoice means unallocating payments, reverting to draft, marking as sent and reallocating payments; a locked year can't be edited at all.
Deep-link to FreeAgent for the easy fixes; allocate in Project Plus for paid invoices and locked periods.
Need to spread an annual insurance bill or a deferred fee across the year? In FreeAgent that means hand-posting prepayment journals and reversing them every month. Project Plus lets you stretch any posting across multiple periods with one action - no prepayment journals, no reversals.
Manual journals to the accruals code, reversed month after month. Easy to get wrong.
Pick a posting, choose the periods, done. The spread is applied automatically.
Spotted a cost in the wrong ledger account, or a project that should have been split - but the year is locked and filed? Project Plus moves the amount to a new account or project as an app-side overlay, including transactions in locked financial years, without touching FreeAgent or breaking your reconciliation.
"dated_on is in a locked period." You must unlock the year - and risk your filed figures.
A differential overlay reclassifies the amount safely. The TB still ties out, to the penny.
A shared bill, a bank payment, even a journal: divide the posting and send each part to a different project, in any proportion you like. FreeAgent ties a transaction to a single project (and journals can't carry one at all), with no way to divide an already-posted cost across projects after the fact. Project Plus splits it by % or by amount, retrospectively, in locked years, without touching FreeAgent - and it still reconciles to the penny. Split a part again for three or more.
One project per transaction; journals carry none; no way to divide a posted cost across projects after the fact.
Split any posting by % or amount and allocate each part to its own project - then reallocate or stretch each part on its own.
Spin up brand-new projects inside Project Plus to model splits, phases or reporting structures that don't exist in your FreeAgent account. They're reporting-only, so your FreeAgent project list stays clean and nothing changes for anyone else on the account.
Every project is a real, shared FreeAgent record - new ones clutter the account for everyone.
Create app-side projects in seconds and allocate to them freely. FreeAgent is never modified.
FreeAgent gives you a flat list of projects. Project Plus lets you group them - by client, region, development or phase - and roll their P&L up into group subtotals. See the big picture, then drill into any single project.
A flat, ungrouped project list with no roll-up or hierarchy.
Nest projects into groups with automatic subtotals at every level.
Go beyond FreeAgent's fixed report layout. In Project Plus you can build your own groups of P&L accounts, reorder them, and define custom subtotals - so your profit & loss reads the way your business actually thinks, not the way the chart of accounts happens to be ordered. You can even add your own virtual accounts and allocate transactions to them when you want more detail - for example splitting a single "EPC / EICR / Gas Safe" account into separate EPC, EICR and Gas Safe accounts - all without touching FreeAgent.
A fixed P&L layout. No custom groupings, no reordering, no user-defined subtotals. Decisions made in the past are locked in.
Custom groups, free reordering, your own subtotals - plus virtual accounts to split detail out. Update your history to reflect current design choices.
This is the rule everything else is built on. Because an allocation only ever splits a category across projects - it never changes the category total - your project-level trial balance still agrees exactly with FreeAgent's company trial balance.
Anything that ever stops tying out is flagged in a reconciliation exceptions panel - so data-integrity problems surface instead of hiding.

FreeAgent is popular UK cloud accounting software for small businesses, freelancers and their accountants, covering invoicing, expenses, banking, payroll, VAT, tax returns and company accounts. It's genuinely good software, which is exactly why we built on top of it: Project Plus adds the project-level reporting layer FreeAgent doesn't reach, without changing anything in your account. You can find out more at freeagent.com.
No. Allocations, spreads and reallocations are stored as an app-side overlay on top of your FreeAgent data. Your FreeAgent ledger, journals and filed figures are never modified.
Because it doesn't edit FreeAgent at all. A reallocation is a differential overlay applied only inside Project Plus reporting. Category totals are preserved, so the trial balance still reconciles exactly to FreeAgent.
Project Plus reads your journal sets and lets you assign each P&L journal line to a project in Project Plus. This only records which project a line belongs to, so the company totals are unchanged.
For every P&L category, the sum of the project allocations plus the no-project bucket plus journals equals FreeAgent's trial-balance total for that category - decimal-accurate. Anything that doesn't tie is flagged as an exception.
